Honoring the Legacy of Bill Dellinger – July 30 at Hayward Field
Tonight, July 30, the University of Oregon invites the community to a public memorial celebrating the life and legacy of Bill Dellinger, one of the most iconic figures in Oregon and American track and field history. The memorial will take place at Hayward Field, with gates opening at 7:00 p.m. and the service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The tribute comes on the eve of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene—fitting timing to remember a man who left such an enduring mark on the sport.
Bill Dellinger, who passed away on June 27 at the age of 91, was not only a standout athlete for the Ducks—winning NCAA titles in the mile and 5,000 meters—but also a three-time Olympian, earning a bronze medal in the 5,000m at the 1964 Tokyo Games.
As head coach at Oregon starting in 1973, Dellinger led the Ducks to four NCAA cross country championships, a legendary 1984 NCAA track and field title, and helped shape the careers of athletes who went on to break 18 American records and make 17 Olympic appearances.
For those unable to attend in person, the memorial will be streamed live for free at RunnerSpace.com starting at 7:30 p.m. PT.
Let’s come together—whether at Hayward Field or online—to honor the coach, the athlete, and the legacy that continues to inspire generations of runners.
