High School Runner Gets a Nike Deal

Sam Ruthe from New Zealand

Back home in New Zealand Sam Ruthe became the youngest runner to bust the four-minute mile as a 15-year old in 3:58.35. He got it done just 24 days before his 16th birthday. Jakob Igebrigtsen from Norway was the first 16-year old to break four minutes.

On Saturday Sam dropped over to California to compete in the Arcadia Invitational. One of the premier high school track and field meets anywhere. He ran the 3200 meter run with a field of four other sub-four minute high school milers in 8:43.57 for third. The winning time was 8:39.86 from Owen Powell. To cap off the trip and the big race Sam signed an NIL deal with Nike. Way to go!

Here’s our interview with Sam in the media zone at Arcadia.
